Character Development

원문, 영어로 작성됨

The easy path was clear. Cut the mangled shock well out. Drive to the junkyard. Find a 2007 to 2018 Tahoe Suburban Escalade Yukon shock well. Sixty bucks. Weld it in. Drive home. Project done two weeks ago.

My welding homework was a 1968 Fastback I built from a coupe in pieces. I had the chops. I had the gun.

Instead I did the classic guy move. I bought tools that cost ten times more to fix one cheap problem. I'd never pulled a frame in my life. So I gifted myself a week and a half of pulling, stretching, straightening, learning what metal does when you ask it nicely versus when you yell.

🔥❤️😮💪🏆

The practical answer was donor metal and a weld. I chose character development.

Side quest. The same circus let me true up the 911. Could have scored it, swung a sledge, zipped a bead, called it a day. But no. Peace is for other people.

Here's the part I don't see written down often. Most builds get presented as a series of right decisions. The thread goes "did this, then this, then this," and every step looks inevitable. That's not what building is. Building is a series of forks where the cheap option and the long option both work, and you pick one and find out who you are.

🔥❤️😮💪🏆

Cheap option teaches you nothing. You finish faster. You bought a part. You can't repeat the skill.

Long option costs more. Costs time. Costs your weekends. Pays back in something you keep.

I'm 44. The clock is louder every year. But I still pick the long road when the work is worth it. The Yukon got the long road on the front end. Beetle got it on the rear deck. The 911 got it twice.

The Yukon is straighter than it was. My toolbox is heavier than it was. The story is better than it would have been.

Right choice or expensive lesson, I'm not sure. Either answer is fine.
