Paint or Live with Primer in My Soul

Painting a car in a FL backyard is not painting. It's negotiating with the sky.

🔥❤️😮💪🏆

Set up for a Sunday spray. Clouds looked friendly. Ten minutes into the drizzle I remembered the sunroof was masked open. Sprinted outside. Tiny swimming pool on the headliner. Saved it with towels and a shop vac. Nothing died, except my heart rate.

Monday gave me more rain. Tuesday looked like the only window before the week turned to soup. A hurricane was flirting with the coast on the radar. I made a deal with myself. Paint Tuesday or live with gray primer in my soul.

🔥❤️😮💪🏆

Tuesday came. Sky behaved for about three hours. Shot two stage on the roof and hood, then the side panels. The compressor I had was 25 gallons, not the 60 you want. The backyard was not a booth. I hopscotched between panels, chasing flash times and humidity.

FL heat had me second guessing the mix, so I added about 10 percent reducer on the red. That was the wrong kind of brave. Two runs showed up on the driver fender and door. Nothing tragic. Razor, patience, forty minutes. Time paid. Lesson learned.

🔥❤️😮💪🏆

The matte clear was new to me. Mixed half a gallon. The brew looked suspicious. Laid one even coat. Didn't look matte. Waited fifteen minutes, drank coffee, came back. Boom, matte Yukon.

🔥❤️😮💪🏆

Lined up for coat two. Saw the heavy clouds marching straight at me. Surrendered. One coat would have to do.

🔥❤️😮💪🏆

Plastic sheeting was off the table. Fresh matte plus plastic is a future therapy bill. Grabbed the leaf blower instead and did laps around the truck, helping the flash time. Thirty minutes later, first raindrops. Then the full Florida demo reel.

🔥❤️😮💪🏆

The droplets softened the clear and turned the hood into a cheetah. Sanding was risky inside the 24 hour window. Scuff padded it instead, laid a second matte coat at dawn the next morning. Sun baked it hard. A five minute shower in the evening did nothing.

I want to tell you this part went smoothly. It didn't. None of it did.

🔥❤️😮💪🏆

What it had instead was my wife in a respirator. She has her own mountain of work and walked into the backyard with the calm of a field medic, asking if I needed help. Normal families do dinner. I handed her a second respirator and a mixing cup. She held the schedule alive when I was burning.

🔥❤️😮💪🏆
🔥❤️😮💪🏆

Painted cars after work are a circus. The bite is real. The cup needs holding. The clock needs allies.

Quiet thank you to the co-pilot in a respirator who kept it going.
