For a long time, I wanted to tick off one small (or not-so-small) automotive dream: an E46 coupe. To me, it’s one of the best designs BMW has ever produced, not just BMW, but cars in general. It’s one of those rare shapes that doesn’t really age; it simply transitions into classic status. The lines, the proportions, the Hofmeister kink, the short rear overhang, the way the whole car sits, nothing feels unnecessary

Originally, the plan seemed simple. Buy something cheaper, maybe a 320Ci, find a donor, piece it together properly, and build the car I actually wanted. Nearly M3 looks, personal spec, happy ending. On paper, brilliant. In reality, the math had other ideas. Once you start pricing original M Sport bumpers, proper interior bits, trim pieces, options, and all the endless small details BMW somehow made painfully expensive, you realize buying a proper 330Ci makes far more sense than heroically building one from a cheaper base. For a brief moment, I even considered getting into dismantling these cars for parts, because some of the prices people ask make it look like a suspiciously good business model.

Then one day, I saw it. A 330Ci. Factory M Sport. 6-speed manual. Orient Blue. That was it. At that point, the rational part of my brain quietly left the conversation. It was one of those situations where you haven’t even seen the car in person yet, but you’re already mentally driving it

It was worth every single dollar. That first drive told me everything I needed to know. The car feels exactly the way a proper BMW coupe should sharp when you want it to be, yet comfortable enough to happily eat up highway miles. The 6-speed manual is exactly what this car needed, making long drives effortless while still keeping you properly involved behind the wheel

And then there’s the M54 inline-six. If you know BMWs, not much needs to be said. Smooth, eager to rev, mechanical in all the right ways, with that unmistakable metallic straight-six note that only gets better near redline. It’s not about massive power. It’s about how the whole thing makes you feel.

What surprised me most was that reality actually lived up to the version of this car I’d built in my head for years.
