A year on the shelf, and V10

Everyone in our circle is either an architect or a car designer, or both at once. Where does that leave me: I am both at once. But there is one thing I am late on, and that is a long-standing plan to redesign my F10.

The challenge is obvious: F10 is my daily.

So I am changing the design in parts, starting where results come fast, and keeping the whole structure in a state you can actually drive. Worth it.

Design notion has been sitting on my desk since last year. I did it for Bimmer Invasion, did it in a rush, and that is why I was never sure the final version was what I actually wanted.

I refused to redo the rear end back then. That was the wrong call. In architecture there are three things you can do with a house: tear it down and build new, restore it, or build around it. With cars these rules are even stricter. Half measures never end well.

So I let the design settle. It took almost a year. The rear end we ended up reworking together with my people: I had grown too attached to my own version, it needed outside eyes, and they worked.

The width I set at first made me genuinely nervous about whether the car would fit in a lane. She came out wider than Cybertruck. I ran the numbers, she fits, moving on.

Under the hood everything changes too. I love my N55, but new F10 is getting S85, the classic V10 monster. The engine has been sitting on the stands for a while, all that is left is to wash it and prep it for work. I could tuck it into the current shapes, but what matters to me is different: it should be seen. Part of the hood will be glass. On S85 the intakes are designed basically like lungs, and hiding that under steel would be a waste.

Then the work. I took my 3D model, built off a scan of the original body, moved it into an engineering version and split it into pieces sized for the printers at the shop: around 20 pieces for the big panels, 10-15 for the small ones. There is no untouched spot on this car, everything transforms, so there is a lot of printing ahead.

Front bumper went the classic route: glue [brand coming later] plus a chemical activator that grabs instantly. The glue is strong, but not road strong: heat and especially moisture will take it apart over time. For molds it is exactly right, and molds are the only correct ending here. The prototype has one job: fitment, sit it on the car, pull the mold.

Now the part worth knowing before you open the can. This glue is genuinely harmful, it hits the brain hard. Respirator rated for chemicals, strictly, not a construction dust mask. Gloves from 9 mil up: anything thinner it just tears apart along with your skin. I fought with this for weeks, and it is not an experience worth repeating.

The metal staples via plastic welding I added just in case, and honestly: nearly useless. The glue grabs harder than a staple with its single contact point, and the panels are hollow inside, prints are not solid, so the staple has nothing to hold onto. Do not bother. Fitment, car, mold.

After the glue-up, with glue running out of every seam, the whole thing gets sanded and prepped for epoxy. There is a fork here. Epoxy seals the small stuff and makes the surface denser, but sanding it is harder and pricier than filler, and for a mold, shaping with filler is simpler, so it is really a question of cost. I decided to try epoxy, we will see what I say at the finish line.

The hood goes last, and that is a decision, not laziness. I do not know yet how deep S85 will sit in the engine bay, or whether it will sit taller. I prepped the room for it, but the position of the glass window depends on where the engine lands: closer to the cabin or further out. Throwing the prototype on matters now, pulling the mold waits until the very end.

Then came fitting day. Bricks, driveway, F10 out of the garage. Here I have to confess: I recently did something dumb. Repainted the car for fun, the guys at the shop have a spray gun and a compressor, and I have some painting experience. Shot her light gray, wheels included. Came out practically white. Disappointment logged, will repaint later.

The fitting showed two things. First: it genuinely looks good. Second: I am pulling the shape in. Not because I cannot go wider, I already went wider, the front end exists and sits on the car. But because the truth is in moderation. F10 body lets you go wide without breaking proportions for a second, but there are lines where they do break, and I am staying inside the balance. It will be widebody, aggressive widebody, but without ridiculous shapes, of which the aftermarket has plenty already. The job is not to make it wide. The job is to make it right.

You can only pull back from extreme once the extreme is solved. A year on the shelf: it works.

Score is open. Bumper exists, hood waits for the engine, engine waits for a wash. To be continued.

Four Pipes

Somewhere around 10 years ago the horsepower talk died for me. Quietly, no funeral. The moment a 4-door electric family sedan started ripping supercars apart in a straight line, the numbers game was over. Strip a couple seats, drop in a bigger pack, and most of the exotic world gets handed its lunch off the line. So fighting for a badge stopped making sense. I get why guys already inside those families stay. It's a real feeling. But for me it was always aesthetics first, and aesthetics doesn't live only inside a badge.

Track is where performance gets to be performance. Real roads are full of traffic. So in actual life the look, the sound, the interior, the way a thing sits under your hand, that's what's left. The engineering has to be honest underneath. The rest is feeling.

Which brings us to the back of the car.

A car that wants a serious rear end needs 4 exhausts. One fat pipe can sound incredible, no argument. But one pipe reads as look at me. Four reads as I breathe in volume, my engine needs air. That second message is the one that lands in the gut. Against soft, flowing bodywork, 4 tips are the contrast that makes it muscular.

Now the part most people get wrong. They argue exhaust metal. Stainless, mild steel, titanium, like the alloy makes the note. It doesn't. Ask anyone who's built a wind instrument. Carve a saxophone out of jelly and if the chambers are shaped right it still sings. Sound is geometry. Firing order, header length, where the runners merge, the swell of the tube. Pipes shouldn't run straight. They want to widen and pinch, wide here, narrow there, like any real horn.

Get it right and an old 4 can fake a 12-cylinder F1 scream. I've done it more than once.

So 535 came in on 2 pipes that sounded fine. It leaves as an instrument.

2K Cheatcode

Back in 2019 I picked up a burned F10 535i M Sport, 2016, from copart for $2,100. Used market at the time was around 30 grand. The interior was torched and the wiring melted, but the body and engine were clean. So basically I bought a live car that needed everything inside redone + body work.

Brought it home, parked it in the backyard, and didn't go near it for 6 months. Don't know why. Either waiting to want it, or waiting to stop being afraid of what I'd gotten into. At some point I sat down and started.

Replaced the interior, redid the wiring, straightened the body. Got to paint and that's where the interesting math began.

I've always liked Porsche grey, that quiet, slightly warm one. I want that. Call a paint shop, explain what I'm after. They quote me $5-10K. They say it calmly, like that's a normal price to paint a car I bought for 2.1.

Not happening.

Drive to Harbor Freight. 40-gallon compressor for $240 and a spray gun for $400 (don't cheap out on the gun, any savings there come back as runs and orange peel). Speedokote: white $90, black $90, clear $72. Masking tape $6, plastic $12. Under $1K total. Versus $5-10K at the shop.

3.5 gallons of paint once it's thinned, paint till you drop. Could thin more if needed. Smart move would've been to mix it all at once, but no, I mixed in batches, and, wouldn't you know it, ran short on one door. Had to mix a new batch. Came out half a shade darker. That door still sits darker than the rest of the car. So I never approach the Bimmer from the passenger side anymore. If anyone's doing this by hand, folks, mix all the paint at once, with extra to spare. Don't repeat my mistake.

Saturday I pull the moldings and mask. Sunday I paint.

From 20 feet it looks good. From 2, you can see it's a first-time job. That's fine, I made peace with that going in.

Then cosmetics and performance. I order custom 21-inch wheels. Custom takes forever because they build them to spec. They call and say another month. A week in I cave and order stock off the catalog in parallel. Big ones. Y-spokes.

Quick aside.

Y-spokes aren't just a wheel pattern. They're an open mechanism, conceptually close to a skeleton watch, you see everything inside, and that's the whole point. You see the rotor, the caliper, the brackets, how they sit, how the clearances work. It only works if the internals are worthy. If the rotor is small and floats in that big window like a lonely coin on a plate, it's not design anymore, it's a silly chariot. You opened it up, now fill it to the edge.

Which means stock brakes in Y-spokes are an immediate no. So bigger rotors.

Carbon? Thought about it. Carbon is for the track, doesn't work on the street. They run cold and you'll never get them up to temp in city driving. Jay Leno told a story about going to McLaren wanting carbon ceramics and they talked him out of it, said it'd be worse than stock on the road. If Jay Leno didn't go for it, I sure don't need to. I'm not Jay Leno and I'm not tracking the car.

So drilled rotors. Old, solid, proven, exactly what's needed.

Couple of months and several iterations. Measure, doesn't fit, redo, measure again, something else is off, redo. Eventually it sits right.

The Y-spokes fill in. The window closes. The coin becomes a plate.

And here's the funny part. The car when it's all together is a serious chick magnet. Not a bro situation at all, the guys walk right past. Maybe because the F10 is kind of their car to begin with, plenty of women driving them out there. I don't know how it works, just stating the fact.

I sit and look at the car. Think, what's the actual point of doing it this way.

The math is simple. You buy a car for 30 grand on a loan, spend 6 years paying it off, drive it stock the whole time because there's no money left for mods. Or you buy a copart at 5-30% of stock price. You fix it if you know what you're doing or you're willing to learn. The difference goes into mods.

That's the cheat code. Pretty much the idea behind ModsNation.

But there's a con. A car like this is hard to sell. If you buy one, it's probably forever, with rare exceptions. In 2020 someone offered me $50K for this Bimmer. I didn't sell.
